Jaguars coach Urban Meyer has teed it up at the Players Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass, but only within the comfort zone of a scramble format at Tim Tebow’s annual charity event.

Sometime after free agency and the NFL draft, and before training camp, he plans to rectify that.

“I love this course and Tim’s event is coming up in a few weeks, so we’ll be out there,” he said on Friday during a visit to The Players Championship. “I don’t think I’ve ever played it, just played it [on his own ball]. That’s going to change now that I’m here.”

But Meyer is well aware of the challenges and noted that a PGA Tour player he counts as a friend, Kevin Na, had some difficulties during the first round on Thursday at the 17th hole’s Island Green.

“I was working out yesterday and I watched my friend Kevin Na throw a few in the water,” Meyer said. “So it’s a really hard course.”

Meyer came to know a number of Tour players from the close relationship he developed with Jack Nicklaus when Meyer coached Ohio State from 2012-18. Meyer lived off the seventh hole of the Murifield Village Golf Club outside of Columbus, Ohio, and was a frequent guest at The Memorial hosted by Nicklaus, an Ohio State graduate.

“When I first got hired at Ohio State, within a day I got a phone call and he asked me to be part of Muirfield,” Meyer said. “We played golf every year for like seven, eight years, and then he’s just awesome. Him and [Nicklaus’ wife] Barbara are incredible.”

Meyer said that after leaving Ohio State and joining Fox Sports, he played much more golf and has gotten his handicap hovering around single digits.

“I played 75-to-80 rounds last year,” he said. “In the previous 30 years I don’t think I’ve played 75, 80 rounds. I love golf.”

Meyer said The Players Championship and the PGA Tour are a big pieces of the First Coast package that he loves — and thinks should be a strong selling point to free agents and the overall success of the Jaguars.

“I thought it was really important to come out here because this is one of the first times I get to show support for [The Players],” he said. “I love this community. I know this community very well. Obviously, I was in Gainesville for seven or eight years, our kids were constantly at baseball tournaments. I recruited — there’s great high school football in this area. We do the Tim Tebow event. That was a big part of why I took the job. There would be nothing greater to see the 904 and Duval County and Jacksonville just explode behind this team. We have, not a good owner, we have a great owner. That’s why we’re all working so hard, to get him some success in the NFL.”

Meyer fielded some football questions and while he didn’t offer any more specifics about free agents — such as two players he coached in college, quarterback Alex Smith (Utah) and cornerback Janaoris Jenkins (Florida).

“I’m waking up in the middle of the night staring at the ceiling trying to put this … all of us are trying to put this thing together,” he said. “You just look at the history, which I have, just looking through the history of the NFL, how many chances do you get to build a roster like we are? You have cap space, 11 draft picks. You can’t screw it up, man.”

Meyer said he had a chance to speak with offensive tackle Cam Robinson since the team put the franchise tag on him, and Meyer said Robinson’s reaction was “real positive.”‘

But Meyer did say he wanted to see improvement along the entire offensive line.

“I like our line. Can we play better? You’re darned right, we are going to play better,” he said. “But starting with [Brandon] Linder, our center, [guard Andrew] Norwell, [guard] A.J. [Cann], Jawaan [Taylor] at the right tackle and Cam, we’ve just got to get better. Every one of them can play better, and I like all five guys, and I think Cam has got a really good future.”

Meyer said he’s been told the Jaguars may return to London for one game next season but nothing is concrete.

“That’s what I’ve kind of been told,” he said. “I’ve not done a lot of research on it. I was part of a game, when I was at Notre Dame, we played in Ireland. And the trip there is not bad, the trip home was tough.”

The Bryson DeChambeau Show a huge hit at The Players Championship

The Bryson DeChambeau Show a huge hit at The Players Championship

The Bryson DeChambeau Show a huge hit at The Players Championship https://ift.tt/3chmPKH

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – Bryson DeChambeau owned the weekend at Arnie’s place in Orlando.

He’s in position for an encore of The DeChambeau Show at the place owned by PGA Tour.

The Big Man from Big D shot his second consecutive 3-under-par 69 in Friday’s sunlit second round at the Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass to prominently place his name on the marquee at The Players Championship, the Tour’s signature event.

In front of the largest galleries, DeChambeau thrilled his onlookers with his eye-popping power, precise iron play and gentle touch around the greens and looks every bit the player who could win a second Tour title in as many weeks.

“There’s a lot of support, which is great,” said DeChambeau, who was one shot out of the lead when he finished his round. “They always ask how many protein shakes I’ve had, which is funny, and I always reply back with however many I’ve had that day for the most part.”

So, how many have you had?

“I’ve had probably four,” he answered at 1 p.m. local time.

Players Championship: Leaderboard | Photos

DeChambeau has been the Tour’s biggest hit this week since the curtain was drawn on Tuesday. While the limited number of fans flocked to watch him hit balls on the practice ground and then play a practice round, the Players Championship Rules Committee announced the creation of internal out of bounds left of the lake guarding the par-4, 462-yard 18th hole.

DeChambeau said he was considering driving across the lake to create a better angle back across the H2O to the green. The Tour cancelled that part of the show.

“Darn it,” he said.

But the Tour couldn’t keep DeChambeau from going all Arnold Schwarzenegger last week when he took an aggressive line to bash two drives over a lake at the par-5 6th at Bay Hill – each launch exceeding 375 yards – en route to making birdie each time. He went on to win his eighth PGA Tour title.

The reigning U.S. Open champ, in the absence of the injured Tiger Woods, has become golf’s biggest draw. And he soaks up the attention.

The fans didn’t flee when DeChambeau botched his opening act Friday when he made a double-bogey six on the 10th, his first hole.

“You don’t expect to do that the first hole out. Especially since I was hitting it pretty good this morning, and then you go out there, you hit one and you squeeze one right and it goes pretty far right. You don’t hit your second shot where you need it to be and mess up. So you just aren’t feeling comfortable,” he said. “I wasn’t feeling as comfortable as I should have been feeling, and unfortunately, that’s the way my day started.”

The day got better. His swing, however, is still giving him fits. He has spent the past two nights working on the range late into the darkness and likely will do so again Friday night and Saturday night. He ranks in the 70s in Strokes Gained: Off the Tee and said he’s “too sensitive through the impact zone.”

“I’m a perfectionist, and I’ll continue to be so until the day I die and until the day I stop playing this game,” he said. “That’s just the way I am. I love it about me, that’s what makes me work hard and fight for every shot out there, but at the same time it makes me worry about stuff a lot.”

Thus, despite not have his “A” game so far this week, he’s on the first page of the leaderboard.

“I’m happy with the fact that I’ve still been able to keep myself in it and score well,” he said. “I’ve been pretty lucky, for the most part. I don’t think that’ll happen this weekend. I’ve got to make sure that my game is good off the tee, so I don’t have those issues occurring and I don’t have to rely on luck for the most part.”

Despite California changes, ANA Inspiration organizers still planning on no spectators this year

Despite California changes, ANA Inspiration organizers still planning on no spectators this year

Despite California changes, ANA Inspiration organizers still planning on no spectators this year https://ift.tt/3evIWQf

Changes in California’s COVID-19 restrictions on events won’t change the ANA Inspiration’s plan to play without spectators next month.

Officials of the LPGA major championship at Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage confirmed that the women’s golf event will still be played with no fans on the course.

“At the moment and given that Riverside County still remains in the purple tier, there is no change to our plans to play the 50th ANA without spectators,” said Alyssa Randolph, senior manager for golf for International Management Group and tournament manager for the ANA Inspiration, in an email.

Randolph said the tournament is staying close to the changes being made by local officials, but for now there are no plans for fans for the event April 1-4.

Riverside County announced Tuesday that starting April 1, the first day of play at the ANA Inspiration, live outdoor events, including outdoor sporting events, may resume with limited spectators. But under the purple tier, only 100 fans will be allowed at a venue. The county remained in the purple tier Tuesday with an adjusted case rate of 8.3 per 100,000 residents, still slightly above the four to seven cases per 100,000 required to take the county into the less-restrictive red tier.

In the red tier, a venue can have up to 20 percent capacity for an event, but fans can’t come from more than 120 miles away from the venue. The county could move into the red tier next week, but that would be just two weeks before the ANA Inspiration is scheduled.

The ANA Inspiration, the first major of the golf season, was postponed from April to September in 2020 because of COVID-19 restrictions and was played without spectators. The tournament, celebrating its 50th anniversary, returns to its traditional dates of the first week of April this year.

Bryson DeChambeau hit Masters runner-up Len Mattiace at the Players Championship https://ift.tt/3bI5YSe

It’s been 16 years since Jacksonville resident and 2003 Masters runner-up Len Mattiace competed at The Players Championship, but he inadvertently gave an assist to Bryson DeChambeau during the first round on Thursday.

He also got a signed ball for his trouble, though the world’s No. 6-ranked player had no idea who Mattiace was or likely how getting hit by his tee shot at the seventh hole helped DeChambeau escape the par-4 hole with a par.

DeChambeau’s 289-yard drive hit a cart path right of the fairway, ricocheted off Mattiace’s left leg and the ball settled in primary rough. Had it not hit the 53-year-old, two-time PGA Tour winner, the ball would have gone deeper into the woods and made the approach shot to the green more difficult.

Initially, DeChambeau sought out Mattiace and said, ‘Hey, you OK?’ and after getting that assurance, Mattiace thought that would be the end of their interaction. But as Mattiace began walking toward the eighth tee, and before DeChambeau’s group was finished with the seventh hole, one of the world’s most recognizable golfers came back to flag him down and gave him a signed ball without being asked to do so.

“He went out of his way to seek me out,” Mattiace told the Times-Union on Friday as he followed the Jon Rahm, Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed group on the back nine. “[DeChambeau] signed the ball as neat as can be. Arnold Palmer would be very proud.”

The timing actually turned out perfect for Mattiace, whose foundation benefits several Jacksonville charities. He put the signed DeChambeau ball up for auction Friday night at the Rolls Royce Players Party, presented by SAC Collective, with his foundation as the beneficiary.

Mattiace posted a picture of him with the signed ball on Twitter, saying of the DeChambeau drive that struck him: “I’ll take it for the team Bryson, then Bryson was really kind enough to seek me out and give me a signed ball. I’ll use that for my foundation gala.”

Mattiace, once ranked as high as 24th in the world, still has conditional Champions Tour status. He played the Cologuard Classic two weeks ago in Tucson, finishing in a tie for 76th.

Fitness with Averee: Baseball swings for distance https://ift.tt/3qGOaLI

Do you struggle with a steep golf swing? What about slow wrist release or your follow through?

In the latest episode of “Fitness with Averee,” Averee Dovsek demonstrates how taking a few baseball swings prior to your shot can help your golf swing. This drill helps loosen and warm the body up so you can rotate easily.

Having too many different swing throughs can become overwhelming. Swinging the club horizontally is a great tool to use when you get out of sorts.

Combine what you learn through “Fitness with Averee” with Steve Scott’s instruction series and you will be a different golfer on and off the course.
