This week in Tokyo, three of the four players representing Team USA are major winners, with World No. 1 Nelly Korda claiming her first in June at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship. Lexi Thompson and Danielle Kang have one major title apiece. Jessica Korda still awaits her first.
Kasumigaseki Country Club is the host venue for the Summer Olympics golf competition. The East Course is playing 6,648 yards. The tournament has 60 players, no cut and will be a 72-hole stroke-play competition.
The second round starts Thursday morning local time, but the 13-hour time difference means golf fans in North America can watch it in prime time starting Wednesday night.
“You know, I hit it really well today, for the most part,” said Henderson, still just 23 and already with 10 career victories on the LPGA Tour. “A couple loose swings cost me, but otherwise the ball-striking was in pretty good shape. It was just kind of around the greens. It’s disappointing to not see more putts fall, but that’s golf, right?
“So hopefully tomorrow, clean it up a little bit, make some more birdies and climb up.”

TOKYO — By now, you’ve undoubtedly seen a replay of that epic comeback by Dutch middle-distance runner Sifan Hassan, who was tripped up during a 1,500-metre heat at these Tokyo Olympics, falling to the track before springing to her feet, turning on the jets and somehow storming back to win the race.
The biggest storyline Wednesday was the extreme temperature. The mercury hovered around 34 degrees Celsius, although the humidity made it feel more like 40-plus.

In the same group as Henderson, Lexi Thompson’s caddie Jack Fulghum didn’t finish the round due to the heat. He missed the last three holes.
You don’t sprint in Sketchers soft-spikes, but Canada’s Brooke Henderson is also left playing catch up.
The golfing superstar from Smiths Falls, Ont., stumbled to a 3-over 74 during the opening round of action at Kasumigaseki Country Club, a far-from-ideal start to her medal quest. She is eight strokes back of the lead.
